Rochester NH History Podcast: Have You Noticed This Piece of History at Strafford Square?

Aug 10, 2026

Have you ever driven through the traffic circle at Strafford Square and noticed a large watering trough on the Walnut Street side? The trough is a scooped-out, solid granite block measuring 36 inches by 66 inches and about two feet high. It is currently used as a planter to beautify the roundabout. It is not randomly placed here. It belongs at Strafford Square, and you will see why as we explore its history.

The Rochester Historical Society and Museum is located on Hanson Street. Visit www.rochesternh.gov/history for hours of operation, events, contact information, and to learn more about programming.
